Synopsis

The Lady of the Camellias, set in Paris around the middle of the 19th century, tells the story of an unhappy and secret love affair between Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval. The Lady of the Camellias is Marguerite, a young and beautiful woman, who, as a mistress is used to a luxurious and aristocratic life-style but then falls in love with Armand, a decent young man with no personal fortune who also falls in love with her.

The difference in their social standing and the pressure placed on her force Marguerite to break off their relationship and in time, she becomes the mistress of another noble man. When Armand bumps into her again in Paris, he insults her and accuses her of selling herself for money. Seriously ill with tuberculosis and abandoned by everyone; old friends and the men that had used her; Marguerite dies in absolute poverty. It is only when he reads her diary that Armand learns the truth.
